We see repeated patterns all over the place in our everyday life. Consider the patterns in Figure 1.1.0 below; they are easily recognized objects that we might pass by on a daily basis without second thought. Patterns such as these are rarely considered because they are things we see on a regular basis. Yet when we stop to question them, we discover some intriguing properties. What types of symmetry are possible in a repeating pattern? What kinds of symmetry does each pattern exhibit? How many different types of repeating patterns are possible? These are just a few of the questions to be addressed in the following chapters.
