This paper attempts to discuses certain infectious diseases of the ear. It was written to give the layman, as well as the student studying for certification in the field of speech pathology, an insight into the etiology, pathology, symptoms, prognosis, treatment, and speech pathology of these diseases.
The diseases presented in this paper are not all-inclusive, but represent a relatively thorough examination of four of the most common diseases of the ear. The following four diseases are discussed: Acute Suppurative Otitis Media; Otosclerosis, Mastoiditis, both Acute and Chronic; and Labyrinthitis. Each disease is presented as a separate chapter. Also included for clarification in this study, is a Glossary of Terms and a drawing of a sagittal section of the right ear, showing the external, middle, and inner ear.
