The purpose of this project is to develop an understanding about the impact that family members have on the experiences in the initiation, adjustment and retention of Latinas in their first year of college. There are a variety of factors that influence the experiences of a Latinas during their time away from home, but the family provides the basis for investigating the complexity of growing up in a Latino family and attending an American university. My goal is to use my personal experiences and those of several Latina first year students to introduce the contradictions of American and Latino household values and develop a plan to facilitate the adjustment and retention of future incoming students.
