This paper will attempt to identify possible variables related to ototoxicity and the use of CDDP (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum) through a review of the literature. These variables have been the main focus of research over the last three decades and have been used to demonstrate that hearing loss may be inevitable. The purpose of restating these variables is not to provide more of the same information, but to demonstrate the need for educating individuals who are receiving CDDP about the possibility that a hearing loss may occur and to advocate audiological monitoring of these individuals. At this time CDDP induced hearing loss can not be prevented, however, early intervention may ease some of the difficulty. This paper will present a literature review and attempt to design a study to investigate possible correlations between several variables and CDDP ototoxicity.
