Equipment has been designed and constructed for research in the area of electrical breakdown of solid dielectrics. Initial experiments have been performed with (100) KCl crystals studying the dependence of breakdown strength on specimen thickness. For crystal thickness of 10-3 to 10-2 centimeters and pulse duration of 1-3 x 10-8 seconds, a definite trend of an increase of breakdown strength with decrease of specimen thickness is established. This points to the existence of an impact ionization mechanism of breakdown for KCl crystals.
