It is the purpose of this study to give an overall perspective on the origins of the Soviet secret police, its growth an development, and a view on the position of the secret police in Soviet society today. Except for an occasional reference, the role of the secret police outside the borders of the Soviet Union has not been treated, but rather the emphasis has been on discovering the development of the secret police within its Russian context and its effects on the Russian people.
