Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study the dilemma of the moderate Republican in 1964. A dilemma which is not actually a one-sided phenomenon but one which should realistically be divided into two sections, both of which developed largely as a consequence of the nomination of Barry Goldwater as the Republican candidate.
