Before leaving for a semester in Europe with a group from the University of Redlands I became interested in the prospects of studying the problems of a German minority group in Italian Alto Adige (South Tyrol.) Like many Americans I scarcely knew where the Tyrol was. Once I found that the area lay only a short distance from our group's headquarters in Salzburg, Austria, I knew I would have a wealth of information at my disposal.
