Determining optimal shipping routes is a problem that companies across the globe face every day. The vehicle routing problem, which is the optimization of the usage of a fleet of vehicles to service potential customers, is a very complex problem that requires a good deal of GIS knowledge to solve in the ArcMap desktop. This paper documents the process of developing a route generation toolset using ModelBuilder that simplifies the desktop process of vehicle routing. The Vehicle Routing Problem Solution Toolset was comprised of two tools. The first was the Vehicle Routing Problem Solution tool, which simplified the process of inputting parameters and setting analysis layer properties. The second tool was the Attribute Editing Tool, which provided the user with a simple user interface for editing field values in attribute tables.
