The Impact of Trans-National Migration on Commons Management Among Mexican Indigenous Communities

Abstract
Commons management requires commoners. In much of Latin America, indigenous people provide the minds and arms which manage the commons. Migration, however, removes commoners from their territories, creating some conservation possibilities due to reduced pressure of population on resources, but also threatening the agro-biodiversity of managed landscapes. Migration also complicates communities’ ability to invest in commons management. This article reviews the state of knowledge of this situation for Mexico, where trans-border communities sometimes re-connect absent commoners to commons management. Migration creates some opportunities, but many more challenges for commons management in Latin America. It deserves greater attention from commons researchers.
