The animal status in the human world is uncertain at best; at worst, it is contradictory and unjustifiable. In choosing to write about animals, I knew that animals' position in human ethics and on "human" land is controversial; what I did not realize fully was how complicated the term "animal" is. Humans have delineated many categories of animals, all of which we view and treat quite differently. One of my attempts in this essay is to sort these categories out and see how they relate to each other.
